Artists for Puerto Rico’s Statement

“The veil of colonialism has been lifted for the world to see what happens when a land and its people are exploited for over 125 years by the United States. Our community has long been engaged in organized efforts to survive the challenges imposed by colonial rule. Various groups across the island have taken on the shared responsibility of addressing social needs unmet by governmental institutions.

As Artists for Puerto Rico, our mission is to storytell and demonstrate the ongoing resistance and capacity of the Puerto Rican people to foster a grassroots movement towards independence and full autonomy through diverse avenues.

We refuse to accept ongoing violence against our community and demand just reparations for the centuries of exploitation and colonization by the United States. Specifically, we call for the repeal of oppressive legislation such as the Jones Act, along with any other laws hindering Puerto Rico's ability to achieve self-sustainability. This entails not only political autonomy but also economic self-sufficiency, cultural preservation, and social justice for all Puerto Ricans, both on the island and across the diaspora. Furthermore, we advocate for the demilitarization of humanitarian aid, emphasizing the importance of Puerto Ricans, both on the island and across the diaspora, standing in solidarity to rebuild our homeland without external interference.

We support initiatives that prioritize the well-being and prosperity of Puerto Rico's communities, including sustainable development projects, equitable resource distribution, and the protection of natural and cultural heritage.

Our vision encompasses a future where Puerto Rico, Palestine, and all occupied lands are free to flourish on their own terms, fostering a society built on principles of equity, solidarity, and democracy. Furthermore, we call upon the international community to recognize Puerto Rico's sovereignty and to advocate for its right to determine its own political status without coercion or external influence. We believe that an independent Puerto Rico is not only achievable but essential for the fulfillment of the island's potential and the empowerment of its people.

As artists and cultural producers, we stand in firm solidarity with the people of Puerto Rico and all those resisting occupation and fighting for their right to self-determination. We understand the power that our work has in shaping public opinion and creativity in our time. As artists we have a unique responsibility to use our voice and artistic practices to protest and amplify the resistance against occupation and oppression.

We, the undersigned artists, commit to using our art, our resources, and our platforms to challenge at every turn the massive misinformation waged by those who have a vested interest in the destruction of indigenous lands and people without fear of repercussions.

We dedicate ourselves to standing in solidarity with the Puerto Rican people and to use our artistic and cultural practices as tools of liberation in the struggle for sovereignty, dignity, and self-determination. In solidarity with the revolution for independence across all occupied lands, Free Puerto Rico, Palestine, Haiti, Hawai’i, Congo, Sudan, and all those resisting colonization!
